NEW YORK- The 2014 Cherokee will lead Jeep into the future, according to the brand’s CEO.

Mike Manley, who introduced the mid-size sport utility vehicle Tuesday at the 2013 New York International Auto Show, said the design team went for a unique design to not only turn heads, but lead the segment in a new direction.

“We wanted to push the envelope because it’s needed in this segment,” he said following the introduction. “Our share (of the mid-size SUV segment has only been) 3 percent. That’s not good enough.”

The mid-size SUV segment is the largest SUV segment in North America, with roughly 2 million sales in 2012.

Manley, Jeep president and CEO, repeatedly called the new vehicle “the most capable mid-size SUV in the world.”

When it arrives in dealerships in the third quarter of this year, the Cherokee will be available in four different models, ranging from the luxury Limited edition to the Trailhawk, which is designed for off-roading enthusiasts.

To show the vehicle’s wide-range of capabilities, Chrysler Group LLC had a Trailhawk off-road edition scale some fake rocks, followed by a Limited luxury model driving onto the stage.

Depending on the model, the vehicle, which replaces the Liberty, offers best-in-class V6 towing capability of 4,500 pounds, three 4x4 systems for best-in-class capability in all weather conditions and fuel economy up to 31 miles per gallon.

The untraditionally high mpg for Cherokee is a result of “a number of efforts by Jeep engineers” that include a segment-first nine-speed automatic transmission and Chrysler’s 16-valve, 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir 2 I-4 engine, which comes standard in the Cherokee.

“Gas mileage is critical to every single vehicle we launch,” Manley said.

The Cherokee, according to Chrysler, has fuel economy improvements of more than 45 percent versus the outgoing Liberty model.

The Cherokee’s two engine options include a 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 that produces 271 horsepower, 239 lb.-ft. of torque and delivers bestin-class V-6 towing of 4,500 pounds and the fuel-efficient s 16-valve, 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir 2 I-4 engine, which comes standard in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee.

The 2.4-liter Tigershark engine offers up to an estimated 31 mpg highway fuel economy rating and produces 184 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Cherokee will be built at Chrysler’s Toledo Assembly Plant in Ohio.

Since Jeep released images of the vehicle in February, some analysts have praised the vehicle's new, smoother design.

NEW YORK- Kia Motors debuted its final Justice League-inspired member vehicle Wednesday night in New York City.

The vehicle, a Wonder Woman Kia Sportage, is part of a partnership the South Korean automaker has with DC Entertainment and was unveiled in conjunction with the 2013 New York International Auto Show.

“(We) really touched a lot of the visual motifs of her costume that you guys see that makes her costume look visually distinct and dynamic and powerful,” said Jim Lee, co-publisher of DC Entertainment, before the unveiling.

A red and blue exterior color scheme, accented with stars, was derived directly from Wonder Woman’s outfit, while the gold trim wrapped around the vehicle represents the heroine’s weapon of choice, "The Lasso of Truth." Up front, Wonder Woman’s eagle chest-plate emblem was creatively integrated into the production grille and is flanked by blue headlight beams, which reflect her piercing blue eyes.

The customized Sportage is a continuation of a 10-month, eight-vehicle partnership between Kia and DC Entertainment based on the iconic characters that make up the Justice League – Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg.

Each member-inspired vehicle has debuted, but an eighth and final vehicle will be an amalgamation of all seven Super Heroes in one.

"It has been a really fun and creative process," Lee said.

The partnership between the South Korean automaker and DC Entertainment is intended to raise awareness for DC Entertainment's "We Can Be Heroes" giving campaign to help fight the hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa.

The campaign aims to raise funds for the three humanitarian aid organizations working in Africa: Save the Children, International Rescue Committee, and Mercy Corps. In 2012, “We Can Be Heroes” raised almost $2 million, according to officials. The money raised went to help more than 5 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia whose lives have been severely affected by drought and famine.

The New York International Auto Show, celebrating its 103rd year, is open to the public from March 29 through April 7.

NEW YORK- Chrysler Group LLC is “upping the ante” when it comes to its 2014 Dodge Durango in the sport utility vehicle segment.

The new full-size SUV -- set to make its world debut later today -- takes everything that customers love about Durango and adds the latest advancements in technology to enhance its design, capability and functionality, according to the Auburn Hills-based automaker.

“When the Durango was first launched in 1998, it represented a breakthrough in power, size and style,” said Reid Bigland, Dodge president and CEO, in a statement. “Now for 2014, we’re upping the ante by making it our most technologically advanced, fuel efficient and dramatically styled Durango ever.”

The 2014 Durango will be available in the SXT and Rallye, Limited, R/T and Citadel. It features slimmer “split crosshair” grille with mesh textures unique to each trim level. The exterior of the vehicle also redesigned projector-beam headlamps and a raised front bumper.

For a more monochromatic appearance, according to Chrysler, the Rallye and R/T are equipped with dark-tinted headlamp bezels, body-color front and rear lower fascias, wheel flares, grille and sill moldings, all unique to the these packages. The R/T’s ride height has also been lowered by 20 mm, further enhancing its sporty appearance and driving dynamics.

To power the vehicle, customers can choose between Chrysler’s award-winning Pentastar V6 that delivers a more than 600-mile range or 5.7-liter V8 engine that delivers best-in-class 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. torque. Both also have a class-exclusive standard eight-speed automatic transmission that boosts fuel economy as much as 9 percent.

The vehicle is set to make its world debut at 11:40 a.m. today during a press conference at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. The debut will be live streamed at http://host4video.com/nyias13/dodge/.

NEW YORK- The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro isn’t for everyone.

In fact, it’s most likely not practical for many U.S. consumers. But this car isn't for those people, said General Motors Co. North America President Mark Reuss.

The resurrected vehicle, not badge, according to Reuss, is meant for those who truly enjoy speed, horsepower and the sound of a roaring V8 engine.

“This is very special,” Reuss said following the vehicle’s unveiling Wednesday at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. “It’s very designed for this car buyer. This is not a branded exercise.

“It is a Z/28 ... in its true sense of what a Z/28 was and is.”

The vehicle features (click here for detailed specs) the Detroit-based automaker’s 7.0-liter LS7 engine, which was adapted from the LS7 used in the C6 Corvette Z06. It is rated at an estimated 500 horsepower (373 kW) and 470 lb.-ft. of torque in the new Camaro Z/28.

To bring out the full potential of the vehicle and reduce weight, GM did some customizing of its own. By doing things like taking out the trunk carpet and insulation, installing thinner glass for the rear window, making air conditioning optional and removing all but one speaker, the vehicle weighs about 300 pounds less than a supercharged Camaro ZL1.

“This is a highly-engineered piece,” Reuss said. "It’s very different than putting big motors into big heavy cars.”

When the first Camaro Z/28 was introduced in 1967, it was not available with an automatic transmission or air conditioning. The 2014 Z/28, according to GM, will also only be offered with a manual transmission.

Reuss said GM will begin building the Z/28 this fall for testing. The vehicle will be produced at GM’s Oshawa assembly plant in Ontario, Canada.

GM did not announce pricing, but Reuss said it will be the most expensive Camaro offered. The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 – the brand’s current most expensive Camaro -- starts at about $55,000.

Brandy Schaffels, auto analyst and chief editor at automotive advice and research website AskPatty.com, said it is a great time for GM to resurrect the Z/28, which was last used in 2002.

“People had been asking about it for a while,” she said. “It’s totally appropriate … it’s about time.”

Gallery preview

The Z/28 was unveiled alongside the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS. The 2014 Camaros will arguably join the strongest of lineup of Chevrolet performance vehicles in decades.

The refreshed sports car and the new Z/28 will join the newly unveiled 2014 Corvette Stingray convertible, 2014 SS sedan and 2014 Corvette Stingray coupe to round out the brand’s performance lineup.

"These kind of cars, you have to be able to be a car company that can do a few of these here and there to make sure everybody knows what this brand is, and that it's alive and well, Reuss said. “This is the kind of stuff ... it gets everybody crazy excited.”

The Detroit Three made a lot of noise during day one of the 2013 New York International Auto Show. But the Detroit automakers weren't the only ones making noise in New York City. Here's a look at five highlights of day one based on page views and significance:

NEW YORK- The Detroit Three made a lot of noise during day one of the 2013 New York International Auto Show.

The day started with Jim Farley, executive vice president of Global Marketing, Sales and Service and Lincoln, discussing how automakers are going to have to respond to demographic shifts and consumer mindsets in today’s world.

It ended with General Motors Co. blowing out eardrums (they handed out ear plugs for the press conference) with the debut of a 2014 Chevolet Camaro Z/28, and Chrysler Group LLC’s new 2014 Jeep Cherokee off-roading to make its official debut.

“It’s the last show of the year (for the auto show season),” said Brandy Schaffels, auto analyst and chief editor at automotive advice and research website AskPatty.com. “Some of them are saving their best for last because they’ve got to make sure people have a lot to talk about for the summer months.”

But the Detroit automakers weren’t the only ones making noise in New York City. Here’s a look at five highlights of day one based on page views and significance:

5. Benz: Mercedes-Benz AMG debuted its new 2014 CLA45 AMG at the NY Auto Show. The vehicle, starting at $47,450, features a 2.0-liter turbo engine is the most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder production engine with a maximum power output of 355 hp and a peak torque of 332 lb.-ft. of torque.

4. Kia Delivers: Kia Motors is growing, and delivering of its promise of a lineup overhaul. On Wednesday, the South Korean automaker debuted three new or significantly redesigned vehicles, including the 2014 Soul, 2014 Optima and 2014 Forte Koup. The three vehicles are the last of seven promised new or significantly redesigned vehicles unveiled by Kia during this year’s auto show season.

3. Cherokee Crushes: The 2014 Jeep Cherokee made an off-roading entrance Wednesday, which is hard to do in New York City. The vehicle is extremely important for Chrysler, as Jeep aims for global expansion and increased sales. Jeep CEO and President Mike Manley said the design team went for a unique design to not only turn heads, but lead the segment in a new direction.

2. Honda Hoover: It’s one of those “how didn’t I think of that” moments when Honda Motor Co. debuted its 2014 Odyssey minivan with a vacuum. The “HondaVAC,” the first-ever in-vehicle vacuum system, is part of a thorough refresh of the Honda Odyssey for the 2014 model year.

1. Z/28 Resurrection: General Motors Co. did something that not many companies, let alone automakers, have done in recent years: Keep a secret. Without many, if any, leaks, the Detroit-based automaker debuted the new 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.

NEW YORK- The next-generation Subaru WRX should turn some heads if it looks anything like the concept unveiled Thursday at the 2013 New York International Auto Show.

“It promises to be a very exciting car indeed,” said Tom Doll, CEO of Subaru of America, regarding the production version.

The WRX concept featured a large grille design, classic WRX hood scoop with a very aggressive front fascia. The rear design, according to Subaru, echoes the “hexagonal design motif from the front grille and features a dramatically curved trunk lid” that also acts as a rear spoiler.

The vehicle, which also featured a new paint color called “WR Blue Pearl III,” debuted following the unveiling of Subaru’s first hybrid, the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid.

Based on the popular XV Crosstrek crossover introduced for 2013, the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid model arrives in Subaru dealerships fourth quarter of 2013.

Officials did not release any information about specifications or possible production dates of the next-generation WRX.

NEW YORK- The debuts at the 2013 New York International Auto Show were abundant, but an unlikely unveiling seems to be one of the most popular talks of the town.

Honda Motor Co.’s 2014 Odyssey Touring Elite minivan with a vacuum wasn’t the most expensive or luxurious or stylish unveiling, but the vacuum adds a new factor to the segment.

The new vacuum, called the HondaVAC, was developed in conjunction with Shop-Vac, and is composed of a powerful vacuum, replaceable filter and canister bag, with nozzle accessories neatly integrated into a dedicated space on the driver's side bulkhead of the rear cargo area.

Honda said the system, which moves throughout the vehicle, is part of a thorough refresh of the Honda Odyssey for the 2014 model year, adding to its class-leading fuel economy ratings and unmatched safety ratings. The 2014 Odyssey will go on sale at Honda dealerships nationwide this summer. The new vehicle also features sleeker, more sophisticated exterior styling with a new, more deeply sculpted aluminum hood, new aluminum front fenders, a new bolder twin-bar grille, and a revised lower front fascia with integrated chrome-trimmed fog lights. New two-tone mirror housings, darker-finish projector-beam headlight housings, LED taillight bars and new badging add to the 2014 Odyssey's premium look.

MLive Detroit decided to take a closer look at the vehicle. Embedded is a video of the HondaVAC and detailed photos of the minivan at the 2013 New York International Auto Show.

Chinese cyber theft targeted in congressional letter citing 'Ugly Gorilla' hacker organization

A letter from a Detroit-area congressman cites a February study by an information security firm that identified a Chinese cyber theft organization known as “Ugly Gorilla,” staffed by hundreds, maybe thousands of hackers.

DETROIT, MI -- U.S. Rep. Sander Levin (D-Royal Oak), along with U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) are seeking to have China designated as a country that endangers U.S. trade secrets.

The two congressman wrote a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis asking for the "priority foreign country" designation, which could lead to the raising of import duties or a World Trade Organization case.

The letter cites a February study by an information security firm that identified a Chinese cyber theft organization known as “Ugly Gorilla,” staffed by hundreds, maybe thousands of hackers.

"It steals technology blueprints, proprietary manufacturing processes, test results, business plans, pricing documents, and partnership agreements," the letter claims. "Once it infiltrates a victim’s network, it is able to maintain access for nearly a year, sometimes more."

The study found that the theft organization has compromised 141 companies in 20 industries, in one case stealing 6.5 terabytes of data over a ten-month period.

The study linked the organization to the Chinese government.

Levin and Rangel, the top two Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee,

"It is difficult enough for our companies to compete with the endless massive subsidies and other industrial policies of the Chinese government, but add trade secret theft into the mix and it is miraculous that our companies are able to compete at all," the congressman wrote in the letter.

"... We have known for some time that the government of China does not do enough to enforce the intellectual property of U.S. innovators in China. But government-sponsored theft of trade secrets would put China in an entirely different category."

(See the full letter here)

Concerns over China and the theft of trade and security secrets involving Detroit's auto industry have risen a number of times in recent months.

In December, a Troy couple was convicted of stealing information on hybrid vehicle technology from GM for use by a competitor in China.

(More: Engineer and husband found guilty of stealing GM trade secrets)

In January, the sale of lithium ion battery producer A123 Systems to a Chinese company prompted Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow to raise concerns over potential threats to national security.

One-of-a-kind Buick built for General Motors styling legend finds new life in Zeeland barn

They are resurrecting a one-of-a-kind 1956 Buick convertible that was custom-built for Bill Mitchell, the legendary head of styling for General Motors Corp. for almost 20 years.

ZEELAND, MI – The atmosphere is relaxed in Don Mayton’s barn every Tuesday morning as nine “car guys,” most of them in their 70s, gather around a table over coffee and doughnuts.

But they are not here to swap stories about old cars. Soon they will get up from the table and resume work on a project that has brought them to Mayton’s barn nearly every Tuesday for the past four years and is likely to keep bringing them back for a couple of more years.

They are resurrecting a one-of-a-kind 1956 Buick convertible that was custom-built for Bill Mitchell, the legendary head of styling for General Motors Corp. for almost 20 years.

During his 42 years with GM, Mitchell was the man behind some of its greatest styling achievements; the 1955-57 Chevrolet Bel-Airs, the 1963-65 and 1966-67 Buick Rivieras, the 1963-67 Corvette Stingray, the 1975-79 Cadillac Seville, and the 1970-81 Chevrolet Camaros.

The “1956x Buick Century” was built to Mitchell’s specifications with custom trim, a two-tone paint job, a souped-up engine, wire wheels and an interior with swivel bucket seats. It bears a special serial plate, "S.O.90022," as testimony to its singular pedigree.

But that’s not how it looked seven years ago, when Mayton, a retired General Motors plant manager with a fondness for Buicks, bought it from a collector who had rescued it from a used car lot in Holland during the 1970s.

“I found the car in a highly deteriorated condition,” says Mayton, drawing appreciative chuckles from the all-volunteer crew that has torn it apart bolt by rusted bolt.

“You could look inside and see through the floor,” says Mayton.

Gone were the custom bucket seats that Mitchell had installed. Gone were the custom side exhausts and power engine. The custom paint job was faded and painted over.

Since Mayton’s crew began working on their “frame-off restoration,” the chassis has been fully restored and painted its original Seminole Red. The engine and drivetrain have been completely rebuilt and are in running condition.

But the body is still a work in progress. Mayton and his crew have restored and primered most of the exterior panels and found matches for the original paint job that will be sprayed on at the end of the project.

The interior remains the biggest question mark. For all of its celebrity, they have not found a detailed photograph of the interior, Mayton says. The swivel bucket seats and console were discarded and the interior was returned to stock condition when Mitchell returned the car to General Motors.

Their lack of success is not due to a lack of resources. GM’s styling studio and retired stylists who worked with Mitchell have given Mayton’s crew full access to their files and collective memories.

“Our goal is to make it exactly like it came from the factory,” says Mayton, who concluded the car had 225 unique parts and features from his study of the original “shop order” they found in manufacturer's files.

For several years, Mayton has searched for a restoration company that can replicate the hard rubber compound used on the steering wheel of Mitchell’s convertible. He thinks he’s found a shop in Phoenix that can do it.

The one-of-kind clear taillights also are a question mark. Although they are intact and uncracked, the group is still debating whether they should be polished out or remolded from scratch.

Mayton also is unsure about the engine compartment. They built a period correct engine with two four-barrel carburetors, but he’s been told that Mitchell may have installed a set of rare side draft carburetors on the engine.

That means finding the carburetors and fabricating a special intake manifold similar to one he’s seen on another restored Buick. He’s found someone who can fabricate it with a modern computerized milling machine, but Mayton wants to make sure it will display the hand-tooling marks found on the original manifold.

Like the engine manifold, steering wheel and taillights, those details do not come cheaply. Neither will the U.S. Royal whitewall tires he’s still trying to find.

While the task may seem daunting, Mayton and his crew gained credibility among restorers in the past decade when he led a similar effort to restore a dilapidated GM “Futurliner” back to its original condition.

The Futurliner, a futuristic bus-like vehicle which toured the U.S. in the 1950s to promote GM’s image, is now trailered to museums and car shows throughout the nation. It currently is on display at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners.

Mayton also owns several other vintage Buicks and a 1936 Bowlus-Teller travel trailer which he tows behind his 1936 Buick Roadmaster sedan. Prior to taking on Mitchell project, he and his group finished restoring a 1929 Buick.

For Mayton and his pals, all of whom have their own project cars back in their garages at home, attention to detail transcends deadlines and dollars.

As a plant manager, Mayton saw enough production schedules and deadlines. Other members of the group have backgrounds in engineering, mechanics and body work. One of them meticulously photographs each step of the restoration for their web site. .

Asked how much he has spent on the project, Mayton smiles. “I don’t even want to guess. Then I’d have to tell my wife.”

Mayton, who is 74, pauses and adds, “This is so much fun. As long as the Lord gives me good health, we’re going to finish it.

“It’s more than a car. It’s the adventure of getting there.”

NEW YORK- The 2014 Jeep Cherokee is getting mixed reviews from critics and MLive.com users.

Chrysler Group LLC officials and some analysts have said the vehicle is destined to lead the mid-size sport utility vehicle segment and Jeep into a new direction.

“We wanted to push the envelope because it’s needed in this segment,” said Mike Manley, Jeep president and CEO, following its unveiling Wednesday at the 2013 New York international Auto Show.

Manley, Jeep president and CEO, repeatedly called the new vehicle “the most capable mid-size SUV in the world.”

When it arrives in dealerships in the third quarter of this year, the Cherokee will be available in four different models, ranging from the luxury Limited edition to the Trailhawk, which is designed for off-roading .

However, some MLive.com users have been less than enthusiastic about the redesign, comparing it to vehicles such as the Chevrolet Aztek, which does not have the best design reputation.

MLive Detroit decided to take a closer look at the vehicle. Embedded is a video of the unveiling and detailed photos of the Cherokee at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. Also, below are the courtesy images from Chrysler and Cherokee unveiling.

Chrysler exec: Sales streak to continue in March, Dart GT arriving shortly

Reid Bigland, Chrysler head of U.S. sales, said he anticipates the Auburn Hills-based automaker to achieve the milestone, including a double-digit sales growth for the Dodge brand.

NEW YORK- Chrysler Group LLC expects its sales streak to hit 36-consecutive months of year-over-year sales in March.

Reid Bigland, Chrysler head of U.S. sales, said he anticipates the Auburn Hills-based automaker to achieve the milestone, including a double-digit sales growth for the Dodge brand.

“March is going to be a squeaker, but I think we’ll be up from a sales perspective,” he told media following the unveiling of the 2014 Dodge Durango at the 2013 New York International Auto Show.

Bigland, also head of Dodge president and CEO, said all of the Dodge brand’s vehicles are helping contribute to its success.

February was Dodge’s best February sales in six years and its 21st-consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains. Four Dodge brand vehicles set sales records in February, including the Dart compact sedan, Avenger mid-size sedan, Journey full-size crossover and Challenger muscle car.

Bigland also said he expects the Dodge Dart to have its fourth-consecutive month of record sales – topping 8,000 units sold this month.

Sales of the compact car, which have been less than what many predicted, should be helped out soon by the arrival of the Dart GT, the newest trim level for the vehicle.

Gallery preview

The vehicle, which debuted at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in January, should arrive in dealer showrooms in about 60 days. It features a new, more-powerful 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir2 four-cylinder engine, which produces 184 horsepower and 174 lb.-ft. of torque.

Bigland said he expects the new option to be the vehicle’s most-popular within one year.

“It will definitely be the quickest Dart off the line,” he said. “And our customers, hard core Dodge customers, like that power off the line.”

Since the vehicle’s much-anticipated release in June, Dart sales have remained mediocre. Chrysler sold 25,303 Darts through the end of 2012, including 6,105 in December.

The Dart is particularly important to the Auburn Hills-based automaker because it was the first vehicle jointly designed with the automaker's Italian owner, Fiat SpA. It is based on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, a compact sold in Europe, but is wider and longer to handle Americans' need for more space.

The Dart replaced the Dodge Caliber. It is built at Chrysler's assembly plant in Belvidere, Ill.

Automakers, including Chrysler, are scheduled to report their March sales on Tuesday. Overall, sales this month are expected to be robust for the U.S. automotive industry.

Analysts: March auto sales strongest since 2007

Automotive analyst research firms Edmunds.com and Kelly Blue Book predict sales last month will total about 1.5 million new cars and trucks, marking the best month of sales since 2007.

DETROIT- March is expected to be the best month of U.S. vehicle sales in more than five years.

Automotive analyst research firms Edmunds.com and Kelly Blue Book predict sales last month will total about 1.5 million new cars and trucks, marking the best month of sales since 2007.

“We’re not quite back to pre-recession levels, but the industry is getting closer to a full recovery every month,” said Edmunds.com senior analyst Jessica Caldwell in a statement.

Edmunds.com expects sales to total 1,478,208 million vehicles, which would mark the biggest single month since 1,555,945 new cars and trucks were sold in May 2007. KBB expects sales to come in at about 1.45 million vehicles sold, which would be the highest monthly sales total since August 2007.

The projected sales will be a 24.0 percent increase from February 2013, and a 5.3 percent increase from March 2012.

With “attractive incentives still widely available,” Kelley Blue Book anticipates sales of full-size pickup trucks to lead the sales growth with a 14.9 percent year-over-year improvement in March.

“Although incentives have helped boost truck sales in recent months, a steady climb in housing starts will continue to support the truck market even if incentive spending declines,” said Alec Gutierrez, senior market analyst of automotive insights for KBB

Volkswagen and Honda, according to KBB, will lead the way with expected gains of 9.6 and 8.7 percent, respectively. While leading in terms of year-over-year improvement, this contrasts with the double-digit growth Volkswagen posted throughout 2012.

Chrysler Group LLC also expects its year-over-year sales increase to continue for a 36th-consecutive month.

Reid Bigland, Chrysler head of U.S. sales, said he anticipates the Auburn Hills-based automaker to achieve the milestone during the 2013 New York International Auto Show last week.

“March is going to be a squeaker, but I think we’ll be up from a sales perspective,” he told media following the unveiling of the 2014 Dodge Durango at the show.

Bigland, also head of Dodge president and CEO, said he expects double-digit sales growth for the Dodge brand.

Automakers, including Chrysler, are scheduled to report their March sales on Tuesday.

2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28: How'd it become a reality?

The 2014 Camaro Z/28 project, dubbed code-word ''HP'' inside of General Motors Co., was created by a team, but one executive literally drove home the argument for its production.Watch video

DETROIT- The debut of the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 last week in New York City was the talk of the town.

But how’d the vehicle come to fruition?

The project, dubbed code-word “HP” inside of General Motors Co., was created by a team, but one executive literally drove home the argument for its production.

GM North American President Mark Reuss said he took three unnamed board members and his boss, GM CEO and Chairman Dan Akerson, for rides in a prototype vehicle to get the go-ahead for production.

“We built a ‘mule’ two years ago in our shops in Milford,” Reuss told reporters following the vehicle’s surprise debut Wednesday at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. “I took my boss for a ride in the car and I said, 'We want this car badly, I want this car badly' … He said, 'You got to give the board members a ride in this car,' so we gave the board members a ride in this car.”

According to Reuss, the drives went "really good" and now there's a new Camaro Z/28 on its way.

Reuss, who was visibly excited about the vehicle, appears to be the Detroit-based automaker’s most-prominent “car guy.” Earlier this year, he also introduced the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette coupe in Detroit and the Chevrolet SS performance sedan in Daytona.

Gallery preview

The Z/28, which GM will begin building this fall for testing, expected to generate about 500 horsepower and get 470 foot-pounds of torque thanks to its LS7 engine, which is used in the C6 Corvette Z06

Reuss said the “sound of an unrestricted LS7 is pretty musical.”

To bring out the full potential of the vehicle, GM reduced weight by about 300 pounds compared to a supercharged Camaro ZL1. To do that, GM took out the trunk carpet and insulation, installed thinner glass for the rear window, made air conditioning optional and removed all but one speaker to bring the vehicle's weight down

"This won't be the highest-volume car we do obviously," Reuss said. "But these kind of cars, you have to be able to be a car company that can do a few of these here and there to make sure everybody knows what this brand is, and that it's alive and well."

So why does GM want to produce a low-volume vehicle?

It’s simple. Vehicles such as the Z/28 are usually very profitable for an automaker, according to analysts.

“The price premium they charge for it is proportionally high; therefore even though those vehicles are low in value, they’re very high in profitability," said Jesse Toprak, TrueCar.com senior analyst. Torpak said the vehicle is a “halo car” for not only the brand, but the automaker. It should bring prospective buyers into dealerships and even if they don’t leave with a Z/28, they may leave with a less expensive Camaro or other vehicle.

GM did not announce pricing, but Reuss said it will be the most expensive Camaro offered. The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1– the brand’s current most expensive Camaro -- starts at about $55,000.

Reuss said GM will begin building the Z/28 this fall for testing. The vehicle will be produced at GM’s Oshawa assembly plant in Ontario, Canada.

“This is absolutely everything that we wanted to do, and we haven’t been able to do it in a long time,” Reuss said.

When the first Camaro Z/28 was introduced in 1967, it was not available with an automatic transmission or air conditioning. The 2014 Z/28, according to GM, will also only be offered with a manual transmission and optional air conditioning.

The 2013 New York International Auto Show is open to the public from March 29 through April 7.
