Mazda has pulled the wraps off its new CX-5 crossover ahead of its debut Wednesday at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show.

DETROIT -- Mazda has pulled the wraps off its new CX-5 crossover ahead of its debut Wednesday at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show.

As expected, it shares several design elements of Mazda's larger, seven-passenger SUV the CX-9, which had its global reveal a year ago at the same venue.

The fully redesigned CX-5 will come equipped with Mazda's SKYACTIV 2.0- and 2.5-liter gasoline engines, as well as a 2.2-liter diesel engine.

Mazda didn't release specs, nor did it say what transmission options will be available, if any, beyond a six-speed automatic. Based on previous and current engine options, expect around 155 horsepower for the 2L engine and 185 horses from the 2.5L. It's not clear if the diesel will be available statewide.

The CX-5 arrives in Japan in February, followed by a global roll-out later in the spring.

The Mazda CX-5 was launched in 2012 as a 2013 model and quickly grew to become one of the Japanese automaker's core models, accounting for about a quarter of Mazda's annual sales. It's sold in 120 countries.
