We take a closer look at the 2017 Toyota Corolla iM. Watch video
One of the first post-Scion cars to be re-branded as a Toyota is the Corolla iM.
Toyota announced earlier this year that is is folding its youthful Scion brand but keeping most of its models, including the FR-S sports car, now known as the Toyota 86; the iA sedan, now the Yaris iA, and the iM 5-door hatchback.
We took a closer look at the iM hatchback.
What it is: This is the 2017 Toyota Corolla iM in "electric storm" blue. It has a 1.8-liter, DOHC 4-cylinder engine with 137 horsepower, and a 7-speed, automatic transmission. Its fuel EPA rated fuel economy is 28 miles per gallon city, 36 mpg highway and 31 mpg combined.

Some of its competitors: Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus, Honda Civic
What we liked: We thought the center stack and the entire front dash was one of the best layouts we've seen in any vehicle at this price range. With a glossy finish over the display and controls area, and a white leather accent on the black dashboard, the design people at Toyota/Scion nailed this portion of the car.
The Corolla iM's handling was taut and agile. Its fuel economy will leave you smiling at the pump, even in a time of lower gas prices.
What we did not like: It lacks performance chops. A large, more powerful engine in this car may not achieve the economy desired, but its foot-to-the-pedal acceleration did not seem to match its aggressive exterior. The option to manually shift gears with the shifter did not help this, and this continues to seem like a pointless option in all cars and trucks in general.
Verdict: This a great car for the price, so long as your not looking for performance. In terms of a roomy, economical hatchback, the Toyota Corolla iM would be a solid, gas-conscious purchase.
Price as tested: $20,355
