For the second year in a row, Subaru and Lexus took top honors for best brand and best luxury brand, respectively.

DETROIT, MI - The depreciation of a car or truck is one of the single greatest expenses vehicle owners will incur in their first five years of ownership, according to Kelley Blue Book.

On that front, the industry-tracking firm on Tuesday released its 2016 Best Resale Value Awards for the cars and trucks it says are likely to depreciate the least.

For the second year in a row, Subaru and Lexus took top honors for best brand and best luxury brand, respectively. But General Motors fared well, too.

"While both Subaru and Lexus deliver incredible resale value, we also continue to be impressed with General Motors, which tops domestic automakers with seven combined awards for Chevrolet and GMC and places four of its vehicles in our Top 10," Eric Ibara, director of residual values for Kelley Blue Book, said in a release. "In addition, the majority of the Top 10 Best Resale Value vehicles this year are trucks and SUVs, which is further testament to the strength these segments will carry in the future. Five out of the Top 10 vehicles with Best Resale Value for 2016 are pickup trucks."

KBB broke out best value-holding vehicles into 22 different categories, and also picked an overall top 10 models, as seen below.

Now in their 14th year, KBB's Best Resale Value Awards are calculated by
automotive analysts that review millions of transactions. Vehicles that are selected for the award have the highest five-year residual values, expressed as a percentage of their original Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. It excludes low-volume vehicles and vehicles with an MSRP of more than $60,000, except for in the plug-in vehicle, luxury and high-performance categories.
