DETROIT, MI - It's one of the biggest automotive events in the world, and fittingly, it's right in the heart of the Motor City.

The 2016 North American International Auto Show returns to Detroit's Cobo Center next month, when more than 40 vehicles are expected to make worldwide and North American debuts.

Here are some of the highlights of what the show will offer readers and the general public alike:

The Drive Home - Three classic cars from Detroit automakers are making a 2,4000 pilgrimage from America's Car Museum in Tacoma, Wash. to their birthplace in Detroit. A 1966 Ford Mustang, 1961 Chrysler 300G and 1957 Chevrolet Nomad will make the trek from Dec. 27 to Jan. 8, when they'll arrive at a celebration to kick off NAIAS.

The Gallery - The ultra-luxury car showcase returns to MGM Grand Detroit, where more than $7 million worth of exotic and high-end vehicles will be on display.

Press Preview - On Jan. 11 and 12, more than 40 vehicles will make their world and North American debuts. We'll be on hand for all of them.

Industry Preview - After the press preview days, the show floors will be open for two days to some 3,500 automotive analysts, designers and engineers from about 2,000 companies around the world.

Charity Preview - Often referred to as the Auto Prom, the Charity Preview is a black-tie affair that has raised more than $100 million for children's charities since being established by the Detroit Auto Dealers Association in 1976.

The Public Show - And then the show opens to the public for a nine-day run, beginning Jan. 16. Some 800,000 guests are expected to pass through the Cobo Center for the 2016 Detroit auto show.
