DETROIT, MI- General Motors Co.’s Cadillac ATS is the 2012 "Esquire Car of the Year," officials announced today.

The men’s fashion and culture magazine called the 2013 luxury compact “perhaps the single most important thing Detroit has built in years, and it is one hell of a car to boot.”

Esquire bases the award on performance, acceleration times, fuel mileage, sales potential and “how a car makes (the magazine's editors) feel.”

The car of the year award, along with a host of others, is currently featured at Esquire.com and in the October print and digital editions Sept. 18. Esquire’s October issue will also contains a long-form feature documenting the making of the ATS, from design to manufacturing, which began recently in Lansing.

“The new ATS is Cadillac’s spirited challenger, built to take on the world,” said Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac marketing. “Having its design and performance validated in this fashion is a meaningful step in our journey.”

ATS, which debuted at the beginning of this year, is the second of 10 all-new or significantly redesigned models in the next three years.

The Detroit-based automaker, led by GM CEO and Chairman Dan Akerson's introduction of the ATS in January, continues to market it as the elite vehicle of the compact luxury segment.

The Cadillac ATS' initial marketing campaign -- called "Cadillac ATS vs. the World" -- features the luxury compact sedan in the deserts of Morocco, the Monaco Grand Prix course in Monte Carlo, the Guoliang Tunnels in China and windswept Patagonia, Chile.

Ford Motor Co.’s Focus ST also received a nod from the magazine as the “Domestic Car of the Year.”
