UPDATED: Detroit Electric unveils all-electric $135,000 sports car

DETROIT- Detroit’s new electric vehicle manufacturer is just hours away from debuting its first vehicle in the Motor City.

The company, Detroit Electric, plans to unveil a limited-edition two-seat sports car based on the Lotus Elise’s platform during a private event tonight at the Fisher Building, its new global headquarters.

The company, a resurrected name brand made popular in the early 1900s for producing electric vehicles, will only create less than 1,000 models of the vehicle that is being unveiled tonight. The sports car is slated to go on sale in target markets by the end of August 2013 for "in the neighborhood" of $135,000.

Unveiling the vehicle in the Motor City, according to Detroit Electric CEO of North America Operations Don Graunstadt, was important to the company and its new founder, Albert Lam, former Group CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group and Executive Director of Lotus Cars of England. The brand was revived by Lam in 2008.
