DETROIT, MI- General Motors Co. will make a “significant powertrain-related announcement” this week in Metro Detroit, according to company officials.

Dan Flores, a spokesman for GM, declined to release exact details, but the “major announcement" is related to the Detroit-based automaker’s Global Powertrain Engineering Headquarters in Pontiac.

Sam Winegarden, GM vice president of Global Engine Engineering, is expected to be joined by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, Pontiac Mayor Leon Jukowski and U.S. Rep. Gary Peters for the announcement.

The Global Powertrain Engineering Headquarters’ more than 3,000 employees lead GM’s engineering, development and testing of propulsion systems, according to Flores.

The scheduled announcement comes about two weeks after GM North America President Mark Reuss said GM is poised to invest $1.5 billion or so in its North American facilities this year.

“GM, Chrysler and Ford employ two out of every three autoworkers in the U.S., and base more employees in the U.S. than the competition – by a factor of eight,” Reuss said according to prepared remarks for the Automotive News World Congress. "For our part, GM has announced North American facility investment of over $10.2 billion since July 2009, creating or retaining more than 26,500 jobs.”

As part of the $1.5 billion, GM on Monday announced a $600 million investment at its Fairfax Assembly and Stamping Plant in Kansas.
