Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's itinerary, posted to the government's website, said he will speak 9:35 a.m. Thursday at the Essex Engine Plant.

Ford Motor Co. will make an announcement Thursday morning, March 30 at its Essex Engine Plant in Windsor, Ontario.

An invite from Ford Canada says that Joe Hinrichs, President of the Americas, and Mark Buzzell, President and CEO Ford Canada, are expected to speak. CBC reports that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is on his way to Windsor and "is expected to be alongside Ford officials" for the announcement.

Trudeau's itinerary, posted to the government's website, said he will speak 9:35 a.m. Thursday at the Essex Engine Plant.

"It's going to be a good news day for our Windsor site and for Canada," Unifor Local 200 president Chris Taylor told CBC.

This announcement comes two days removed from Ford announcing a number of investments at home in Michigan.

Tuesday's announced investments include $850 million to the Michigan Assembly Plant, $150 million to support 130 jobs at its Romeo Engine facility, and $200 million to add an advanced data center to support the automaker's future with mobility.

Work on the Michigan Assembly Plant will start in May, as Ford said it will take about a month to remove and reinstall necessary tooling to build the new Ranger and Bronco models.

The confirmation of these announcements comes on the heels of Ford's January investment of $700 million into the Flat Rock Assembly plant.

Combining those investments is how we get to the $1.9 billion figure for the company's new investments in Michigan in 2017.

In January, the automaker canceled plans for a $1.6 billion Mexico assembly plant to invest the $700 million at home in Michigan. The Flat Rock expansion will include a new manufacturing and innovation center, which is expected to result in the addition of 700 direct jobs.

Ford CEO Mark Fields also announced, in January, plans for production of 13 all-new electric vehicles to be made in the next five years. At the North American Auto Show a week removed from the big news, Ford announced the return of the Ranger in 2018, and Bronco in 2020.

Hinrichs confirmed that both vehicles will be built at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne.

The new vehicles include:

  • Hybrid Ford Mustang in 2020, which will feature V8 power and low-end torque, which will make it "more fun to drive," according to Fields.
  • Hybrid Ford F-150, which will be built in Dearborn and will feature increased capability and can even double as a mobile generator capable of powering a worksite.
  • Two new "pursuit-rated" hybrid police vehicles to be built in Chicago.
  • Ford Transit custom plug-in hybrid to be released in 2019 in Europe.
  • Test fleet of 20 transit-connect hybrid taxis to be tested in major cities across the U.S.
  • An all-new, fully electric SUV to be made at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant and released by 2020 in North America, Europe and Asia. Plans call for the new vehicle to have a range of at least 300 miles.
