Ford Motor Co. will recall more than 570,000 vehicles worldwide due to separate issues dealing with engine fires and doors unexpectedly flying open.

Ford Motor Co. will recall more than 570,000 vehicles worldwide due to separate issues dealing with engine fires and doors unexpectedly flying open.

In the first, the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker will recall 230,000 vehicles with 1.6-liter GTDI engines due to a rise of under-the-hood fires. The company reports in a news release it is aware of 29 North American fires related to the recall, but no injuries.

The recall covers:

  • 2014 Ford Escape manufactured at the Louisville Assembly Plant between Feb. 12, 2013 and Sept. 2, 2014.
  • 2014-15 Fiesta ST built at the Cuautitlan Assembly Plant between Jan. 22, 2013 and May 27, 2014.
  • 2013-14 Fusion from the Hermosillo Assembly Plant between Feb. 15, 2012 and June 6, 2014.
  • 2013-15 Transit Connect manufactured at the Valencia Assembly Plant between June 13, 2013 and Dec. 14, 2014.

"In the affected vehicles, a lack of coolant circulation could cause an engine to overheat, resulting in a crack in the cylinder head," Ford reports in the release. "A cracked cylinder head can result in a pressurized oil leak. Oil that comes into contact with a hot engine surface increases the risk of a fire in the engine compartment."

In the second major recall, an expansion of a previous one, Ford reports it needs to replace faulty door latches in more than 211,000 2014 Ford Fiestas, 2013-14 Ford Fusions, and 2013-14 Lincoln MKZs.

The company said the "pawl spring tab" inside the side door could break, causing the door to not close and increase the risk of the door opening while in motion.

Ford said it is not aware of any incidents or injuries related to this recall. The affected vehicles:

  • 2014 Fiesta built at the Cuautitlan Assembly Plant between June 1 and Oct. 31, 2013.
  • 2014 Fusion built at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant from June 18 to Oct. 31, 2013.
  • 2013-14 Fusion manufactured at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant between June 1 and Oct. 31, 2013.
  • 2013-14 Lincoln MKZ built at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant between June 1 and Oct. 31, 2013.

The Associated Press reports the second recall is an expansion of a previous one of 2.3 million vehicles including the 2012-15 Ford Focus and 2013-15 Escape and C-Max models. This recall reportedly already cost the company $640 million.

A.P. adds that the company recalled 692,700 Escape SUVs in 2014 due to an issue with doors not latching properly. In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, Ford said it will notify dealers and owners, and replace all four door latches for free.

Ford also announced two smaller recalls concerning 548 2017 Ford F-450 and F-550 trucks due to the driveshaft, and 111 2017 Ford Edges due to missing windshield header welds. Dealers will replace both affected parts free of charge.
