DETROIT - Four new Ford Fiestas were revealed Tuesday by Ford Motor Co. in Cologne, Germany, where the Dearborn automaker has been building the subcompact car since 1976.
The models released Tuesday are aimed specifically at the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, a Ford spokesman told MLive. The company has not yet said when a new model or models for the U.S. market will be revealed.
The Fiesta is more popular in Europe than it is in the U.S.
In the Old World, it's Ford best-selling model. But in the U.S., where buyers have been flocking toward larger vehicles, the little Fiesta's sales through the first 10 months of the year have dropped 27 percent on an annual basis to 42,188 units.
For Europe, the expanded Fiesta range will include the Titanium, sporty ST-Line, high-end Vignale and crossover Active trims.
The new Fiesta will be powered by a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine, which Ford said will be the first of its kind to feature cylinder deactivation, which disengages and re-engages the cylinder in 14 milliseconds, or about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye.
The eighth-generation Ford Fiesta will be available in Europe in the summer.
