It is the first year that a separate award will be handed out for SUVs, which had previously been lumped together with pickup trucks.
These are the final nine:
Car of the Year
Truck of the Year
Utility of the Year
Finalists and winners in each category are selected by a jury of 60 American and Canadian automotive journalists.
The winners will be named Jan. 9 just before the first press day gets underway for the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
To be eligible for the award, the vehicles need to be new or substantially updated for the model year.
