Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling more than 1.9 million vehicles because of airbags that may not deploy in a crash, the Associated Press reports.

DETROIT - Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling more than 1.9 million vehicles because of airbags that may not deploy in a crash, the Associated Press reports.

The automaker said it knows of at least three deaths and five injuries that could be related to the issue, which involves a faulty wiring design for airbag and seat-belt control modules.

FCA said it is contacting customers, and dealers will fix the issue free of charge.

Affected vehicles include:

  • 2010 Chrysler Sebring
  • 2010 Chrysler Cirrus
  • 2011-2014 Chrysler 200
  • 2010-2012 Dodge Caliber
  • 2010-2014 Dodge Avenger
  • 2010-2014 Jeep Patriot
  • 2010-2014 Jeep Compass
  • 2012-2013 Lancia Flavia

Most of the recalled vehicles are in the U.S., with the balance including 224,860 in Canada, 284,051 in Mexico and 284,051 outside of North America.

FCA's recall is unrelated to one by General Motors last week, in which the latter recalled 4 million cars for airbags that failed to deploy.

GM's recall is linked to at least one death and three injuries. It involves a small computer in the car that controls air bag deployment.

In general, to see if your vehicle is affected by a recall, you can plug your vehicle identification number, or VIN, into NHTSA's VIN lookup at vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/.
