Ford Motor Co. and Mazda Motor Corp. announced separate recalls Thursday affecting door latches and hatches.

DETROIT - Ford Motor Co. and Mazda Motor Corp. announced separate recalls Thursday affecting door latches and hatches.

Ford said Thursday it's adding about 1.5 million vehicles to a door-latch recall that will now cover some 2.4 million cars, SUVs and vans in the U.S.

Ford first recalled 830,000 vehicles Aug. 4 due to the issue, in which side door latches can prevent a door from properly closing, which could lead to it opening while driving.

"In the affected vehicles, the pawl spring tab in the side door latch could break," the company said. "A door latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a 'door-will-not-close' condition."

Ford said it is aware of one accident and three injuries that could be related to the issue.

The recall includes the 2013-15 Ford C-MAX and Ford Escape, 2012-15 Ford Focus, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC and 2014-16 Ford Transit Connect.

Dealers will replace the side door latches for free.

The Associated Press reports that the magnitude of the recall has prompted Ford to adjust its expected pre-tax profits for the year.

Separately, Mazda is recalling 2.2 million vehicles globally, including some 759,000 cars and crossovers in the U.S. and Canada, because of a rear door hatch that could lose its support, fall on people and injure them.

There are so far no reports of injuries or accidents related to the problem, according to Mazda.

Mazda ha found that, due to insufficient coating protection during production, the supports that hold up the rear hatch can become corroded over time by water containing road salt.

The recall covers Mazda 3 cars from the 2010-2013 model years, Mazda 5 vans from the 2012-2015 model years and certain CX-5 and CX-3 crossovers from the 2016 model year.

Dealers will replace the lift supports for free. Customers will receive notification this month or next.
