GM's March sales up 1 percent amid fleet reductions

The Detroit automaker's retail deliveries for the month grew 6 percent to 193,524 units.

DETROIT, MI - General Motors' total sales in March were up 1 percent to 252,128 units, as the company continued to wind down its sales of daily rental units.

The rise was led by the GMC brand, which increased 13 percent to 40,318 units. Chevrolet sales also did well in March, up 7 percent on an annual basis to 125,920 units.

Buick's sales dipped 6 percent to 15,772 units, while Cadillac was off 7 percent to 11,514 units.

For the first quarter of 2016, GM's retail sales improved 7 percent year-over-year to 536,537 units.

The rise in retail sales was led by the Chevrolet brand, which posted a 10 percent increase to 472,730 units. GMC was up 2 percent to 104,320 units, and Buick grew 9 percent to 45,539 units.

Cadillac's retail sales in March fell 10 percent to 30,150 units.

"The strong retail and Commercial sales GM has been delivering are the result of a multi-year strategy to strengthen our brands, attract new customers and grow profitably," Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president of sales operations, said in a release. "We are growing retail sales faster than the industry, and we are doing it with disciplined incentives and inventories, and lower rental deliveries. Our business is very healthy, and we are going to manage it with conviction to keep it that way."
