DETROIT, MI - The Honda Civic has been named the North American Car of the Year, and the Volvo XC90 took the top Truck/Utility of the Year honor.
Now in their 23rd year, the Automotive Press Association's awards were announced Monday morning at the beginning of the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
An independent jury of 53 automotive journalists from the U.S and Canada selected the six finalists for the 2016 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year awards.
The six 2016 finalists were:
Cars
- Honda Civic, Chevrolet Malibu and Mazda MX-5 Miata
Trucks/Utilities
- Nissan Titan XD, Honda Pilot and Volvo XC 90
The 53 independent journalists whittled down a list of the new or substantially updated cars and trucks for the 2016 model year to a short list.
That list of cars and trucks was then put to a three-day road alongside their competitors in what the team of reporters calls the "Hell Drive," referring to the course's proximity to Hell, Mich.
The cars were then awarded points based on their performance and features. The jurors distribute 25 points, and can give a maximum 10 points to a vehicle.
