DETROIT, MI - FCA US said Friday it is voluntarily recalling 284,089 older-model Jeep SUVs to replace airbag modules and front and side sensors after the company became a ware of seven injuries caused by inadvertent airbag deployments.
FCA US stressed that the airbags in question were not equipped by Takata Corp., a Japanese supplier now at the middle of a massive recall for airbags that have exploded in some instances.
The recall Friday by FCA US covers certain 2003 Jeep Liberty and 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. The company said affected customers will be advised when they can schedule service, which will be done for free.
In a separate move Friday, FCA US is also recalling 275,614 2012-2015 Dodge Journeys to apply a moisture sealant and replace certain electrical components.
The company said it wants to prevent moisture buildup that could eventually damage Anti-Lock Brake System modules. FCA US said it is not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the condition, which is often preceded by an instrument-cluster warning light.
Regular, foundation braking functions are not affected.
The company said it will advise affected customers when they can take the Journeys in for service, which will be done for free.
