Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar-Land Rover, Suzuki, Tesla Motors, Volvo Trucks, Volkswagen and Spartan Motors could join the 11 companies already part of the recall, which spans 19.2 million vehicles in the U.S.
DETROIT, MI - Another seven companies could be added to the massive Takata Corp. airbag recall, the Associated Press reports.
Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar-Land Rover, Suzuki, Tesla Motors, Volvo Trucks, Volkswagen and Spartan Motors could join the 11 companies already part of the recall, which spans 23.4 million airbags found in 19.2 million vehicles in the U.S.
The AP reports those seven companies have received letters from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seeking information on models that have airbag inflators made by Takata.
Faulty driver- and passenger-side airbags made by Takata have been linked to at least eight deaths, including seven in the U.S., and more than 100 injuries. In some instances the defective airbags have exploded, sending metal shrapnel through the car.
Investigations by automakers, Takata and safety regulators have been searching for the root cause of the defective airbags. So far, the consensus is that the chemical propellant that ignites the air bag inflators can be damaged by moisture over time in humid environments. Once damaged, the propellant becomes explosive.
Takata's recall is now considered the largest automotive-related one in American history.
Many of the automakers affected by the recall have been sourcing replacements parts from other suppliers as car owners bring their vehicles in to dealerships to be fixed.
