DETROIT, MI - Ahead of the launch of an all-new version of its best-selling car later this month, Chevrolet is touting the forthcoming 2016 Cruze as lighter yet larger, and with new technologies and powertrains.
The General Motors brand plans to unveil the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze on June 24.
It's an important debut. The Cruze is sold in 115 markets and recently surpassed 3.5 million in global sales.
General Motors North America and Chevy brand president Alan Batey said Wednesday the Cruze replaced 15 other compact vehicles when it was introduced. "By consolidating design, engineering and marketing efforts, we were able to produce an award-winning, value-driven sedan that won over customers around the world," Batey said in a release.
GM also noted Wednesday that sales of the Cruze climbed 10 percent on an annual basis to 273,060 units in 2014. However, in the first five months of this year sales of the Cruze have dropped 12 percent, including a 27 percent plummet in May.
The Cruze in one of several redesigned Chevy cars being unveiled this year; it follows the Volt, Spark, Malibu and Camaro.
GM said when the Cruze arrives at dealerships early next year, more than 95 percent of Chevy's U.S. product lineup will be less than three years old.
What will get revamped next?
