The Dearborn automaker said that will help increase its production by about 40,000 units.

DETROIT, MI - Ford Motor CO. announced Tuesday it is shortening its summer shutdown from two weeks to one at most of its North American assembly plants to meet customer demand for trucks and SUVs.

The Dearborn automaker said that will help increase its production by about 40,000 units. It is the third summer in a row the company has prompted to reduce its shutdown schedule.

On Tuesday, Ford spelled out some of the demand it's been seeing as of late: In April, the Ford F-150 spent an average of just 20 days on dealer lots, Edge sales jumped 78 percent, and Escapes and Explorers "remained in tight supply." The 2016 ford Explorers are arriving at dealer lots now.

Ford's production schedule in North America this year calls for facilities to shut down from June 29 to July 10 for building maintenance and retooling. But six assembly plants and several supporting powertrain and stamping sites will shut down only the week of June 29.

Those facilities include:

Chicago Assembly
Dearborn Truck Assembly
Kansas City Assembly
Kentucky Truck Assembly
Louisville Assembly
Oakville Assembly
Livonia Transmission
Rawsonville Transmission
Sharonville Transmission
Sterling Axle
Buffalo Stamping
Chicago Stamping
Dearborn Consolidated
Kansas City Stamping
Kentucky Stamping
Woodhaven Stamping
