Ford said it is aware of four "minor accidents" and no injuries that could be linked to the issue.

DETROIT, MI - Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday it is recalling 422,814 vehicles in North America due to a potential electrical issue that could cause loss of their power-steering assist function.

The glitch causes the vehicles to revert to manual steering mode, which makes them harder to steer, especially at lower speeds.

Ford said it is aware of four "minor accidents" and no injuries that could be linked to the issue.

The recall affects the following vehicles:

  • 2011-2013 Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT vehicles built at Oakville Assembly Plant Sept. 7, 2010 to Feb. 28, 2012;
  • 2011-2012 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant Sept. 7, 2010 to Feb. 28, 2012;
  • 2011 Mercury Milan vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant Sept. 7, 2010 to Dec. 10, 2010; and
  • 2011-2013 Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS vehicles built at Chicago Assembly Plant Sept. 7, 2010 to Feb. 28, 2012.

Dealers can identify if the vehicle has a problem and will make any necessary fixes.

Separately, Ford also issued a safety recall Wednesday for certain 2015 Mustangs with 2.3L engines. Ford said it is recalling 19,486 of the Mustangs in North America due to potentially elevated underbody temperatures.

The elevated temperature is problematic because, if prolonged, it could lead to a leak in the fuel line, creating a potential fire hazard. It could also degrade the parking brake cables.

Ford said it is unaware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to the issue.

Affected vehicles include certain 2015 Ford Mustang vehicles built Feb. 14, 2014 to Feb. 10, 2015 at Flat Rock Assembly Plant.

Dealers will make necessary upgrades.
