Registration has already filled up for the May 16 unveiling of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro in Detroit.
DETROIT, MI - That was quick.
Registration has already filled up for the May 16 unveiling of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro in Detroit.
Registration opened at 12:01 a.m. Monday. "By 8 a.m. (Monday) we had already filled all our available spots. By noon, we had about 800 people on our waiting list," GM spokesman Monte Doran said. "It clearly exceeded our expectations."
Those who won't be able to make the event but want to keep up with the day's festivities will still be able to do so; GM will be broadcasting a live video feed from the event, Doran said.
Of course, we'll have plenty of photos and video here on MLive.com, too.
The May 16 unveiling of the sixth-generation Camaro will cap a day-long celebration on Detroit's Belle Isle, where the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix will take place later that month on the weekend of May 29-31.
More info on the forthcoming pony car can be found at www.thecamarosix.com.
Meanwhile, the current, fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro has been selling well. GM said Friday it expects the 500,000th fifth-generation Camaro to be delivered this month.
In making the announcement, Chevrolet also teased a camouflaged sixth-generation Camaro in this video:
The fifth generation of the Camaro first went on sale in August 2009. The Camaro then passed the Ford Mustang in 2010 to become the best-selling performance car in the U.S., according to GM.
Last year, sales of the Camaro rose 7.1 percent on an annual basis to 86,297 units. In the first two months of 2015, sales are up 3.6 percent over 2014.
The sixth-generation Camaro will be built at General Motors' Grand River Plant in Lansing, where the Detroit automaker also produces the Cadillac ATS and CTS models.
