DETROIT, MI - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is now urging owners of some 7.8 million Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors cars to have defective airbags made by Japanese auto parts company Takata Corp. replaced immediately. NHTSA began a probe of the faulty airbags in June. The airbags could rupture and spray pieces of metal into the driver and front-seat passenger in an accident.
NHTSA said it expects areas that are humid and where there have already been regional recalls for the airbags to be most affected, including Florida, Puerto Rico, limited areas near the Gulf of Mexico in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Louisiana, as well as Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and Hawaii.
"Responding to these recalls, whether old or new, is essential to personal safety and it will help aid our ongoing investigation into Takata airbags and what appears to be a problem related to extended exposure to consistently high humidity and temperatures," NHTSA Deputy Administrator David Friedman said in a release. "However, we're leaving no stone unturned in our aggressive pursuit to track down the full geographic scope of this issue."
Consumers who are uncertain whether their vehicle is affected can search their car's VIN number at www.safecar.gov. Most of the affected cars are in the early-to-mid 2000s model years.
Based in Tokyo, Takata manufactures seat belts, airbags, steering wheels, interior trims, and child restraint systems at 56 plants in 20 countries. The company had $5.2 billion in annual sales in its most recent fiscal year, ended March 31, 2014.
