NEW YORK- Mazda is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its MX-5 Miata with a very limited edition MX-5 model.
Mazda North American Operations today unveiled the MX-5 Miata 25th Anniversary Edition during the 2014 New York International Auto Show. The Japanese automaker said it will only make 100 of the roadsters available to the U.S. market.
“We call the MX-5 our brand icon,” said Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda chairman of the board, during the unveiling. “It represents who we are.”
Yamanouchi said from day one the company had the phrase "Jinba Ittai" in mind when developing the vehicle. It means “oneness between car and driver.”
Mazda, which has sold more than 900,000 of the roadsters globally, originally unveiled the MX-5 on Feb. 9, 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show.
The limited-edition vehicles feature special badging, aluminum alloy pedals, standard Almond leather seats and door trim and Soul Red Metallic premium coat exterior.
The limited-edition vehicles will go on sale this spring. All 100 2015 MX-5 Miata 25th Anniversary Edition models will be made available for pre-order exclusively at MazdaUSA.com on May 17.
"The car is really special," said Robert Davis, Mazda senior vice president of U.S. operations.
Mazda also had its next-generation chassis with the vehicle body on display during the event. Officials said the goal, thanks to its new chassis, is to drop more than 220 pounds off the current model.
Mazda’s anniversary vehicle followed the debut of a limited-edition 50th anniversary edition of the Mustang, which Ford unveiled in the morning.
