AUBURN HILLS, MI- The all-new 200 will be capable of up to 36 miles per gallon, according to Chrysler.

The 2015 midsize sedan – set to go on sale by July – is rated by the Environmental Protection Agency at 23 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined with the standard 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir2 I-4 engine. The combined mpg is 4 greater than the current model.

2015 Chrysler 200 models equipped with the available best-in-class 295 horsepower Pentastar V6 engine are rated at 19 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined. The highway rating is a three mile per gallon improvement versus the outgoing model with the V6 engine.

The fuel economy improvements, according to Chrysler, are led by a segment-first standard nine-speed automatic transmission and improved aerodynamics.

“With fuel economy ratings of up to 36 miles per gallon and features typically found on more expensive luxury vehicles, the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 delivers the premium features customers want at a price they can afford,” said Al Gardner, Chrysler Brand president and CEO, in a statement.

When it arrives in showrooms in the second quarter, the vehicle will start at $21,700. It will be available in four models: LX, Limited, S and premium C. All trims start at under $26,000. With an available all-wheel-drive system and Pentastar V6 (a $4,200 package), the vehicle is rated at 18 mpg city, 29 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined.

The vehicle’s standard mpg rating puts it in the middle of the pack for midsize sedans, according to 2014 model-year EPA ratings. The leader for front-wheel-drive, gasoline models is the Mazda 6 rated at 32 combined mpg – 40 mpg highway and 28 mpg city.

The 200 is arguably the most important car launch for the entire company in 2014. The all-new midsize sedan features a “floating” Chrysler winged badge on the front, signature light pipe or available full-LED daytime running lamps and extremely and a coupe-like silhouette that’s smooth, yet sporty.

Gardner recently told MLive that the 2015 200 should be able to top sales of the first-generation 200 and Dodge Avenger – both of which it replaces.

Chrysler started production of the 2015 Chrysler 200 at its Sterling Heights Assembly Plant earlier this month. To help ensure a smooth launch for the highly anticipated vehicle, Chrysler invested $1 billion in the Metro Detroit facility for plant upgrades and an all-new state-of-the art paint shop and fully robotic body shop.
