Former General Motors Co. CEO and chairman Dan Akerson will serve on the Lockheed Martin Corp. Board of Directors. The Maryland-based defense contractor Thursday announced that its board of directors elected Akerson to the position.
DETROIT, MI- Former General Motors Co. CEO and chairman Dan Akerson will serve on the Lockheed Martin Corp. Board of Directors.
The Maryland-based defense contractor Thursday announced that its board of directors elected Akerson to the position.
The announcement comes just over a month after Akerson retired from the Detroit-based automaker due to personal reasons involving his wife, Karin, being diagnosed with an advanced-stage cancer.
Before GM, Akerson, 65, served as chairman, chief executive officer or president of several major companies including XO Communications, Nextel Communications, General Instrument Corporation and MCI Communications. He also served on the boards of the American Express Company and AOL Time Warner.
Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs approximately 115,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation’s net sales for 2013 were $45.4 billion.
Akerson retired Jan. 15. Mary Barra, formerly head of product, succeeded him as CEO. Tim Solso, a former Cummins chief, replaced him as chairman.
