Detroit auto show 2014: Top 10 headlines include new pickup trucks, must-see vehicles

The 2014 North American International Auto Show was one for the ages. DETROIT, MI- The 2014 North American International Auto Show drove into the sunset Sunday with more than 800,000 people attending, but that doesn't mean the fun has to stop.

If you weren’t one of the hundreds of thousands to attend the 2014 Detroit auto show, or you just want to re-live some of the hottest news, we have you covered. Here are the top 10 MLive headlines/topics from the show:

10. Toyota unveils new FT-1 sports car concept: The name FT-1 stands for “Future Toyota,” with the “1” representing "the ultimate expression of a Toyota coupe design." The concept features classic sports care proportions with the driver's seat placed further back from the front the vehicle to improve weight distribution.

9. Subaru 2015 WRX STI: People seem to love anything having to do with the Subaru WRX. After its official debut at the 2013 LA Auto Show, Subaru unveiled the STI in Detroit. The first WRX STI debuted in 1994 with a 250-horsepower, said Tom Doll, Subaru president and chief operating officer and evolved over the years into, "basically a race car for the street." 8. 2015 Chrysler 200 'new flagship,' says Chrysler exec: The all-new midsize sedan, according toChrysler Brand CEO and president Al Gardner, was designed to compete in the highly-competitive segment as the "new flagship model" for the Auburn Hills-based automaker's namesake brand. The all-new midsize sedan features a “floating” Chrysler winged badge on the front, signature light pipe or available full-LED daytime running lamps and extremely and a coupe-like silhouette that’s smooth, yet sporty.

7. Detroit auto show 2014: Motor City 'jewel' opens to the public: Opening day was one for the ages and NAIAS 2014 Chairman Bob Shuman had a chat with MLive about his expectations for this year's public show, which was the most-attended in more than a decade.

6. 2015 GMC Canyon: A series of articles leading up to the show and its debut the night before the official opening made for a lot of headlines for the 2015 GMC Canyon. The new midsize pickup truck will start with two engine options: A standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder estimated at 193 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque and a 3.6-liter V6 estimated at 302 horsepower (224 kW) and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. For the 2016 model year, GM will also offer an all-new Duramax 2.8-liter turbodiesel

5. 2014 Detroit auto show provides thousands glimpse into industry's present and future: Coverage of opening day for the public, including an article from Gus Burns, gave readers a look into the show itself, rather than the cars. “It's a venue for major manufacturers to match their newest engineering creations against the competition, but also a stage for new companies and innovative technology.  4. 3. 2015 Ford F-150: Arguably the most important debut from the show, the 2015 Ford F-150 could tow Ford into a completely new world of pickups. The new full-size pickup will be the first mainstream, heavy-volume vehicle to feature a nearly all aluminum-alloy body and all-new high-strength steel frame, helping shave up to 700 pounds off of the current model.

Charity Preview: The event raised $4.8 million for children’s charities, but the most popular coverages for MLive included two photo galleries of attendees at the event posing as they walked into the event’s all-new “Studio 25” and overall photos of the one-night black-tie event, were the most popular.

1. Must-see vehicles: MLive went through nearly all of the 550 vehicles on display at this year’s show to find the best for you. The top vehicles ranged from sports and muscle cars to concept vehicles and all-new pickups.

The NAIAS is considered one of the top global automotive events in the world and of huge importance to Metro Detroit. Since its introduction 25 years ago, officials estimate the show has had a $9.7 billion economic impact on the region. This year is expected to have a $365 million impact.
