The investments will support production of a new V6 engine, new 10-speed transmission and an existing six-speed transmission, as well as assembly plant upgrades in Detroit, Flint and Romulus, Mich.; Toledo, Ohio and Bedford, Ind.
FLINT, MI- Three Michigan manufacturing facilities are part of a nearly $1.3 billion investment plan announced Monday by General Motors Co.
The investments will support production of a new V6 engine, new 10-speed transmission and an existing six-speed transmission, as well as assembly plant upgrades in Detroit, Flint and Romulus, Mich.; Toledo, Ohio and Bedford, Ind.
Michigan facilities will receive about $1.21 billion of the more than $1.27 billion investment in the five facilities.
Flint Assembly will receive nearly half of the announced investment -- $600 million -- for facility upgrades, including a new paint shop.
Other Michigan investments include $121 million in Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly for a logistics optimization center and $493.4 million for Romulus Powertrain Operations, including $343.4 million for equipment to produce an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission and $150 million to increase capacity of a previously announced new V6 engine.
GM did not announce specific details about the new 10-speed transmission or new V6 engine programs.
Non-Michigan investments include $30.6 million in Toledo Transmission Operations for increased capacity for an existing six-speed transmission and tooling for a new variant; and $29.2 million in Bedford Castings, which includes $22.6 million to produce components for the 10-speed transmission and $6.6 million to produce components for an existing 6-speed transmission.
GM Executive Vice President and North America President Mark Reuss is announced the investments this afternoon at Flint Assembly with Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and UAW Region 1C Director Norwood Jewell.
The announcement comes just before GM CEO and chairman Dan Akerson is scheduled to address the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. about “GM's investment plans in the U.S.”
The nearly $1.3 billion investment brings the Detroit-based automaker's announced investment plans this year to more than $3.2 billion in North American manufacturing facilities, including $2.8 billion in the U.S.
