The Detroit-based automaker Tuesday announced its new 6.2-litre V8 for the full-size pickups, which will be available this fall, produces an SAE-certified 420 horsepower (at 5600 rpm) and 460 lb-ft of torque (at 4100 rpm) -- the most power of any pickup engine and torque of any light duty pickup truck engine.

DETROIT- General Motors Co. has certified the largest engine option for its 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, and it’s powerful.

“Power and towing capacity are fundamental capabilities for full-size pickups,” said Jeff Luke, GM executive chief engineer for full- and mid-size trucks, in a statement. “The 2014 Silverado and Sierra deliver unmatched power and towing capability with a host of ingenious driver aids.”

The engine is the largest announced for the all-new full-size pickups. It will be available for Silverado LTZ and High Country and Sierra SLT and Denali models.

In addition to the 6.2-litre V8, Silverado and Sierra also offer a 4.3-litre V6 SAE-certified at 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque and a 5.3-litre V8 certified at 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.

All three engines feature direct fuel injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing.

GM did not release EPA fuel economy estimates for the 6.2-litre V8, but the 5.3-litre V8 has EPA-estimated fuel economy of up to 23 mpg highway.

The Silverado is arguably the most important vehicle for the Detroit-based automaker. It is the second best-selling pickup and one of the best-selling vehicles in the U.S.

During a conference call last week, Kurt McNeil, vice president of U.S. sales operations, said GM is on track to have about 25 percent of its sales and half of pickup production to be 2014 models this year, as it winds downs sales from the 2013 model-year.

McNeil said all three light-duty body styles are in production with 5.3-liter V8 and 4.3-liter V6 engines. This fall, the company will launch a 6.2-liter V8 powertrain and Chevrolet Silverado “High Country” premium edition.
