Dozens of GM workers will participate in the company's second annual teamGM Cares Week activities, including building a Peace Park and sprucing up local neighborhoods.

FLINT, MI – General Motors employees across Genesee County will step away from assembly lines and offices and into various neighborhoods, cleaning up blight and garbage, and trimming down overgrown weeds in and around Flint.

Dozens of GM workers will participate in the company’s second annual teamGM Cares Week activities, including building a Peace Park and sprucing up local neighborhoods.

The employees will work throughout the week of Sept. 9 at the Flint-based Catholic Charities office to build a Peace Park at the organization’s Center of Hope facility located at 901 Chippewa St.

Additionally, GM employees and representatives from the Flint River Watershed Coalition will clear land near the Durant-Dort Factory One, which the company purchased earlier this year.

The cleanup will extend from the Durant-Dort Factory along the city-owned river walkway on Monday, Sept. 9, from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. The site is located at the corner of Water and Lyon streets.

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, employees at GM’s Flint North American Tooling Center will work along Second and Haselton streets in Flint – west of the Flint NATC facility – clearing vacant lots and sidewalks, as well as continuing a project aimed at eliminating blight in the neighborhood around the plant. Cleanup activities are scheduled from 1-5 p.m. Wednesday.

GM Customer Care & Aftersales employees will be working on several projects the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 12. Volunteers will be at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint taking food donated by the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and dispersing packages to members of the community.

Other CCA volunteers will be at the Food Bank to box food and non-food items, at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore facility to build a wall and shelving units and at the Salem Housing Development Authority to clear brush and paint inside a home.

“While ‘teamGM Cares Week’ underscores our pledge to giving back, our employees volunteer all year long for the nonprofits and causes they are passionate about,” said Sabin Blake, GM’s global marketing manager for Cadillac and head of the teamGM Cares program.

“Each year, the program gets stronger which signifies the ever-growing commitment from our teams."

In 2012, the 3,652 teamGM Cares Volunteers who chose to track their volunteerism recorded 37,790 hours of service. To learn more about the teamGM Cares volunteers, visit www.teamgmcares.com. For more information on the charitable work of the GM Foundation, visit www.gm.com/gmfoundation.
